Iowa nurses and TTUHSC's graduate clinical path
TTUHSC's graduate nursing tracks accept applications from Iowa, and an Iowa resident's clinical hours can stay in Iowa with a preceptor and facility TTUHSC signs off on. Iowa's Board approves no programs from other states, yet it still lists conditions those programs meet, and a few of them land squarely on your rotation.

Five conditions Iowa sets for programs based elsewhere
Rather than approving out-of-state nursing programs, the Iowa Board of Nursing posts a page of obligations they carry while operating in Iowa:
- Operating authority from Iowa College Aid, an agency separate from the Board
- Obedience to Iowa statutes as well as the home state's regulations
- Reporting data whenever the Board requests it
- Iowa-based faculty and preceptors licensed actively in Iowa or through the compact
- Written clinical contracts that assign responsibilities, reserve control of student learning to faculty, and cover annual review and termination
Every item there belongs to the program. TTUHSC takes part in NC-SARA; how that interacts with Iowa's College Aid step is for TTUHSC to confirm. Your job is narrower: a preceptor and a site that suit the course.
Licenses in play: yours and your preceptor's
Train at an Iowa site as a licensed nurse and Iowa treats you as one: the state wants an active Iowa or multistate license on file, and Iowa Code governs what you do. The exemption in Iowa Code 152.1 shields unlicensed students only, so a nurse licensed in any U.S. jurisdiction gets nothing from it. Compact membership dates to January 2018, which lets one Iowa multistate credential do double duty, covering the Iowa rotation and answering TTUHSC's MSN demand for a Texas or compact multistate RN license. Preceptors fall under 481 IAC 616.16, Iowa's ARNP preceptorship rule. Under that rule, the bulk of the preceptorship should be spent with an ARNP or physician who shares the student's role and population focus; licensure has to come from the state where that preceptor practices; and the written preceptorship agreement is revisited annually. Iowa lets the program and the clinical facility each approve preceptors, much as TTUHSC approves both preceptor and site (preceptor requirements).
Full practice, plus contact hours for precepting
AANP counts Iowa among its full-practice states. For a TTUHSC rotation, though, the question that decides approval is fit: a preceptor whose role and patients match your track, the same point Iowa's own preceptorship rule makes.
Iowa's renewal rules also reward precepting: sixty or more hours guiding a student inside an organized preceptorship convert to six contact hours, as long as the supervising institution provides documentation.
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the Quad Cities
Greater Des Moines tops Iowa's metro list; Cedar Rapids and Iowa City trail it, and Davenport holds down the Iowa side of the Quad Cities. Systems employing Iowa NPs include UnityPoint Health, MercyOne and University of Iowa Health Care. They illustrate the landscape and hold no standing arrangement with TTUHSC.
Across the Mississippi, Moline and Rock Island belong to Illinois, a non-compact state where an Iowa multistate license carries no weight. Keep a Quad Cities search on the Iowa bank unless TTUHSC okays a different plan.

Admission still turns on TTUHSC's own review. Its graduate program pages warn that moving regulations may keep the school from taking students from some states and steer every out-of-state applicant to the Admissions Team for an eligibility check. Should you leave Iowa during the program, TTUHSC expects word no later than 60 days before the move, and clinicals in the new state get a case-by-case decision (relocation guide).

Questions TTUHSC students ask
Do I need an Iowa license for TTUHSC clinical hours in Iowa?
Yes, or a compact one. Iowa requires licensed students at its sites to carry an active Iowa license or another compact state's multistate license, and its student exemption protects only the unlicensed. An Iowa-issued multistate license settles the clinical-site question and TTUHSC's MSN license rule in one stroke.
Could a physician be my Iowa preceptor?
Iowa's ARNP rule expects most preceptorship time with an ARNP or physician working in your role and population focus, so a physician fits Iowa's frame. TTUHSC applies Texas's rule, which accepts APRNs or other licensed professionals able to teach at an advanced practice level, and approves every preceptor individually. Course faculty make the call on fit.
Has Iowa's Board approved TTUHSC's program?
Not in the usual sense, because Iowa's Board leaves approval of programs from elsewhere to their home states. What Iowa asks instead is a list of obligations: College Aid authorization, adherence to Iowa law, data on request, properly licensed faculty and preceptors, and compliant clinical contracts. Meeting them is TTUHSC's work rather than yours.
What if I move from Iowa to Texas partway through?
Tell TTUHSC before you relocate, at least 60 days ahead, because the notice rule covers every graduate online student changing states. Clinicals in the new state are approved case by case, so a preceptor lined up in Iowa may need replacing with one near your new Texas home.
