NP preceptors in Lubbock for TTUHSC students
Living in Lubbock puts you minutes from TTUHSC's flagship campus, yet the School of Nursing still leaves the preceptor and clinical site search to each graduate NP student. The city's hospital systems run their own student rules, and the one with a published process, Covenant Health, asks visiting students to arrive with a preceptor already secured. Here is how a Lubbock search works and how we make it faster.

TTUHSC's flagship campus, and what it changes for you
Lubbock is the School of Nursing's headquarters, on the campus TTUHSC calls its flagship. The F. Marie Hall SimLife Center and the Preston Smith Library are both here, and so are the OSCEs that bring MSN NP students back during the program. For a Lubbock resident, those seven or eight campus days mean a short drive across town rather than a long haul across West Texas.
The advantage ends at convenience. Graduate clinicals are organized around each student's home area, and a Lubbock address does not shift the preceptor search onto faculty. The clinician is still yours to find, SON staff and faculty still review both that clinician and the site, and a fresh electronic agreement goes in for every preceptor each semester. Which Lubbock students have sites arranged for them
Only some TTUHSC students in Lubbock have clinical sites set up by the school. On the undergraduate side, the faculty who teach each clinical course decide where Traditional and accelerated BSN students go, and nurse-midwifery students work with faculty and TTUHSC's preceptor and site coordinators. Students in the NP tracks, from the MSN FNP through the post-graduate certificates, start from their own search.
BSN to DNP students get an added layer of help: TTUHSC says faculty and its preceptor team work closely with them on selecting and contracting preceptors and facilities. Enrolled graduate students may also browse TTUHSC's roster of preceptors from the last two years as a guide. TTUHSC presents both as support rather than an assignment, so the outreach, the fit check and the paperwork remain yours. Covenant Health's published student process
Covenant Health has the clearest public rules for visiting clinical students in Lubbock, posted on its Medical Staff Services page for clinical rotation students. Read it as an example of how a large local employer of clinicians handles students from any school, not as a statement about TTUHSC.
- The school's agreement comes firstCovenant requires the student's school to hold an affiliation agreement with Covenant Health before a rotation at any Covenant facility. Schools send those requests through a link on the same page, so the agreement is a matter for TTUHSC's Affiliation Agreements staff.
- You arrive with the preceptorCovenant's page says students are responsible for procuring a preceptor and that it does not match students with providers. It points students to its online provider directory and suggests calling offices.
- The rotation packetFour items make up Covenant's packet: its Clinical Rotation Application; a Supervising Professional Agreement that you and each preceptor sign, listing your start and end dates; proof you finished Covenant's online orientation; and a photo for your badge.
- Two weeks, at minimumThose documents are due at least two weeks before your first day. Badge pickup at Covenant's Lubbock facilities is not offered on Thursdays, so plan that errand as well.
Covenant Health in Lubbock and Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw, Michigan, are different organizations. Search results blend the two, so read only the Lubbock system's own student page.
UMC Health System and the rest of the city
UMC Health System's public page for students is about jobs rather than rotations. It welcomes students enrolled in nursing programs into Nurse Tech and Nursing Assistant roles, and no published process for NP students from outside programs turned up. Should a clinician based at UMC agree to take you, find out how their unit onboards students and forward that to TTUHSC early.
Hospitals are only part of Lubbock's clinical map. Family practices, pediatric offices, psychiatric clinics, urgent care centers and specialty groups across the city all employ clinicians who may precept. A smaller practice can be a quicker yes, but TTUHSC still reviews the facility, and a site with no agreement in place may need one before you start. The affiliation agreements guide covers that step.
Beyond the city: South Plains towns
Plenty of TTUHSC students live in the towns scattered around Lubbock rather than in the city itself. A clinician in a small-town clinic may see exactly the broad, all-ages caseload an FNP course calls for, while the drive to reach them repeats every clinical day. Set that round trip beside your weekly hours and job shifts before you accept, and ask early whether another program's student already holds that clinician's calendar for your term.

No. TTUHSC's graduate guidance puts the preceptor search on NP students wherever they live, Lubbock included. What living nearby changes is convenience: campus days, OSCEs and the Preston Smith Library are close. SON staff and faculty still approve your preceptor and site, and every semester brings a new electronic agreement for each preceptor.
Can I do NP clinicals at Covenant Health in Lubbock?
Covenant's student page describes a process for rotation students whose school holds an affiliation agreement with Covenant Health, and it expects you to bring your own preceptor. Whether TTUHSC has such an agreement in force is a question for the Affiliation Agreements staff in the School of Nursing's Office of Student Success. Confirm it before you promise anyone a start date.
Does UMC Health System have an NP student rotation process?
Its public student page covers Nurse Tech and Nursing Assistant jobs for people enrolled in nursing programs, and no published route for outside NP students turned up. If a UMC clinician says yes to precepting, learn how that department brings students on board and send it to TTUHSC early so the facility review can start.
When should a Lubbock student begin the preceptor search?
Earlier than any single deadline suggests. TTUHSC keeps its graduate submission deadline off its public pages, facility agreements can take time to arrange, and Covenant alone wants rotation papers two weeks before day one. Starting a full semester ahead of your clinical course leaves room for a second choice. Your course faculty or the Graduate Coordinator will know your actual cutoff.
Where are TTUHSC's OSCEs held for MSN NP students?
TTUHSC's archived graduate FAQ places the OSCEs in Lubbock and says students receive the dates a couple of months in advance. For Lubbock residents, that means campus days with almost no travel. Share the dates with your preceptor as soon as you have them so your clinical schedule accounts for the days you are away.
