Living in Illinois, studying with the TTUHSC School of Nursing
For TTUHSC's graduate nursing tracks, Illinois counts as an open state, and the clinical hours can be done near your Illinois home once SON staff and faculty clear your preceptor and site. Two things set Illinois apart: it remains a non-compact state, and its rules expect nursing programs based elsewhere to file paperwork for clinical placements.

Sort out the license before anything else
The MSN rule at TTUHSC reads as a Texas RN license or a compact multistate one, current and unencumbered. Illinois sits outside that compact, with no legislation even pending, so an Illinois-issued license works only inside Illinois and fits neither category on a plain reading. Put the question to TTUHSC before you apply; one route an Illinois nurse can raise is adding a Texas RN license.
Flip it around and the same fact shapes your clinicals. Multistate licenses from compact states bring no practice privilege at Illinois sites, so patient-care hours in Illinois ride on an Illinois RN license. Illinois paperwork for out-of-state nursing programs
Section 1300.340(n) in Title 68 of the Illinois Administrative Code governs programs from other states that want clinical placements in Illinois. Its packet includes:
- Home-state board approval or accreditation, documented
- A cover letter naming dates, agencies, units and the syllabus
- Each executed clinical-facility contract
- Faculty qualification and preceptor forms
An Illinois approval runs two years, renews, and carries yearly reporting, and Illinois wants nursing faculty licensed there as RNs. Because the text lives in the RN program-approval section and makes no mention of graduate or APRN programs, its reach over a TTUHSC NP rotation is for TTUHSC to judge. Subsection (j) separately asks that preceptors drawn from facility staff be faculty-approved, oriented, on hand any time the student delivers care, and RN-licensed in the state of practice.
How Illinois NPs practice, and what precepting earns them
In AANP's grouping Illinois is a reduced-practice state. Some Illinois NPs practice with a physician collaborative agreement in place; others qualify through practice hours and continuing education, and prescribing certain Schedule II medications and benzodiazepines takes a consultative relationship. Either kind of NP, or another qualified clinician, can precept you once TTUHSC approves; see preceptor requirements.
Precepting has a payoff at renewal time. Illinois credits an APRN with ten CE hours per APRN student per academic term, capping that credit at thirty hours each renewal cycle, with documentation coming from the school.
Chicago, Peoria, Rockford and greater St. Louis
The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro dwarfs every other Illinois population center, well ahead of the Illinois slice of greater St. Louis, Peoria and Rockford. Among the systems employing Illinois NPs are Northwestern Medicine, OSF HealthCare, UChicago Medicine, Advocate Health Care and Endeavor Health. They show where practice clusters; none is a pre-cleared TTUHSC site, and every facility goes through TTUHSC's approval.
Watch the borders. Crossing into Missouri or Indiana swaps in a different board and a different license question, so get TTUHSC's agreement before you build a rotation around an out-of-state clinic.

Meets means you may apply, not that you are admitted. Citing regulations in flux, TTUHSC's graduate pages decline to promise at application time that they can enroll students from every state, and they route out-of-state applicants to the Admissions Team for an eligibility check. Leaving Illinois mid-program calls for notice to TTUHSC at least 60 days ahead, with the new state's clinicals approved case by case (relocation page).

Questions TTUHSC students ask
Can I use another state's multistate license for Illinois clinical hours?
No. As a non-member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, Illinois gives out-of-state multistate licenses no standing at its clinical sites, and Illinois clinical hours need an active Illinois RN license. TTUHSC's MSN rule is a separate question, since it names a Texas license or a compact multistate one; raise both with Admissions.
Does TTUHSC need Illinois approval before my rotation?
That turns on how TTUHSC reads Illinois's out-of-state rule, which lists home-state approval, a request letter, facility contracts and faculty and preceptor forms but lives among the RN program rules and never mentions graduate programs. Any filing would be TTUHSC's job. Ask your course faculty early so a filing, if needed, is handled before your start.
Can an Illinois resident enroll in TTUHSC's BSN to DNP?
Illinois shows Meets on TTUHSC's BSN to DNP disclosure table, with no unable-to-accept note. Check the license wording, though: the BSN to DNP web page names Texas or compact licensure, whereas the catalog asks for a valid unencumbered RN license. Admissions can say which governs an Illinois nurse.
How much time will I spend in Texas?
MSN NP and midwifery students come to campus for 7-8 days over the whole program, OSCEs in Lubbock included. BSN to DNP students visit at least once a semester, typically for one or two days, at intensives in Lubbock, Austin or Dallas. See the intensives page.
