Next door to TTUHSC's home region
New Mexico's eastern plains run straight into the Texas South Plains and Panhandle, where the Lubbock and Amarillo campuses stand, and the Permian Basin campus in Odessa lies just past the state's southeastern corner. For many New Mexico nurses, the School of Nursing's Lubbock headquarters is a regional drive rather than a flight.
That proximity pays off on campus days. On the MSN nurse practitioner and midwifery tracks, in-person time adds up to 7-8 days, and the OSCEs are held in Lubbock with dates posted a couple of months out. A BSN to DNP student makes a short trip every semester to Lubbock, Austin or Dallas, and Post-Master's DNP students gather twice a term for roughly three days, mostly in Lubbock. From Albuquerque or Farmington the trip is longer, so block those dates the day they arrive. The intensives guide sorts them by program.

A Meets mark opens the door to applying, nothing more. With regulations in motion, TTUHSC declines to promise at the application stage that every state's residents can be accepted, and it wants New Mexico applicants to settle eligibility with its Admissions Team before they apply.
The one-semester line in New Mexico's rules
New Mexico's education code does reach schools based elsewhere. Rule 16.12.3.11(A)(2) says that once a program's clinical or field work inside New Mexico runs past a single semester, the program applies to the Board for clinical placement approval. A program answering to a different state's board still owes New Mexico's baseline standards, which sit in section 12 of the same part.
That part of the code is written for programs whose graduates seek New Mexico licensure, and NP programs get no separate mention. Since an NP student's clinical courses typically span several terms, ask your program director how TTUHSC reads the rule for a New Mexico placement well before your first clinical course. The rules also sketch the preceptor New Mexico has in mind: a nurse carrying at least two years of experience, whose license sits at or beyond the one the student is pursuing.
Compact license and full practice authority
Compact licensing began in New Mexico in January 2018, and since June 1, 2026 the Board adds its own charge for the multistate form of the license. A current, unencumbered multistate license satisfies the MSN's call for a Texas or compact RN license; the license requirements page covers the doctoral wording.
AANP places New Mexico in its full practice group, meaning NPs there practice with no mandated physician agreement, and that is the setting a New Mexico preceptor works in. The APRN Compact has not been adopted in New Mexico.
Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington
The Albuquerque area outweighs everything else in New Mexico by population, and Las Cruces, then Santa Fe, then Farmington, follow at a distance. The University of New Mexico's UNM Health System is the state's lone academic medical center. Lovelace and Presbyterian run the other big hospital networks, while Santa Fe's regional hospital, CHRISTUS St. Vincent, belongs to CHRISTUS Health. These names show where clinicians cluster; each facility has its own student rules, and TTUHSC's approval comes separately.
Watch the western and northern borders. Arizona and Colorado are both on TTUHSC's closed list, so keep Four Corners sites on the New Mexico side unless TTUHSC says otherwise. Moving to either state, or anywhere else, starts with a heads-up to TTUHSC 60 or more days in advance (moving guide).

Which TTUHSC campus is closest to New Mexico?
Lubbock and Amarillo sit nearest to much of eastern New Mexico, and the Permian Basin campus in Odessa is close to the southeastern corner. Lubbock matters most for graduate students, since it is the School of Nursing's home and hosts the MSN OSCEs.
Can I study TTUHSC's PMHNP track from Albuquerque?
Yes. The MSN PMHNP carries a Meets for New Mexico; the track takes new students each Spring, and its rotations happen near home under approved preceptors. Do New Mexico nurses pay extra for a multistate license?
New Mexico's Board began billing the multistate compact license separately on June 1, 2026. Because multistate status is what lets a non-Texas license satisfy TTUHSC's MSN rule, make sure your New Mexico license carries multistate status before you apply, and keep it that way at renewal.
What changes if I move from New Mexico to Texas?
Tell TTUHSC first. The notice window opens 60 days or more before the move, and approval in the new location depends on the clinical placement you propose. Texas is TTUHSC's home state, and the Texas guide explains what the programs look like for residents there.
