What TTUHSC publishes about the course
The ttuhsc.edu plan lists NURS 6368 as (3:0.5:7.5) and marks it CL, which means concurrent enrollment in a clinical section is required. TTUHSC's key reads those numbers as 3 credits, half an hour of lecture a week and 7.5 clinical hours a week, so most of the course happens beside your preceptor rather than in the online classroom.
The catalog course description adds the phrase that defines the course: the teaching happens "under the guidance of an approved preceptor." The education track counts clinical time at one credit to three clock hours, the same ratio the informatics track uses.
Just as useful is what TTUHSC leaves unpublished: the semester the course falls in, a total hour figure, who arranges the preceptor and what qualifications that preceptor needs. Your enrolled student advisor can place the course in your plan of study, and course faculty answer the rest.
The education track's other clinical-section courses
NURS 6368 is one of three CL courses on the MSN Nursing Education plan, and the one with the largest practicum share. The other two split their weekly time more evenly between lecture and practice.

Two more courses, NURS 5364 and NURS 5365, appear as (3:3:3) on the MSN Nursing Education page but as (3:3:0) on the post-graduate Education certificate page, so TTUHSC's own pages disagree on whether they carry clinical time. The catalog is TTUHSC's stated official plan, so ask your advisor which version governs yours. The web page totals the MSN track at 39 credit hours.
Certificate students follow the same clinical-section courses, and post-graduate plans are individualized, so your advisor sets when NURS 6368 falls. The Nursing Education program guide covers the track as a whole.
Who can precept NURS 6368
TTUHSC does not publish a qualification list for education preceptors, so the answer comes from course faculty. What is public is the approval rule for graduate students: SON staff and faculty sign off on the preceptor and on the facility, and each preceptor needs a new electronic agreement in every semester you work with them. TTUHSC's text also leaves the setting open. It does not say whether the teaching has to happen in a school of nursing, a hospital education department or another teaching role, so ask faculty which settings fit before you approach anyone.
Once faculty confirm the settings, look for someone whose current work matches the course: a person who teaches every week, has room for a student and can give the kind of feedback a teaching practicum needs. The approval then rests on the details you submit, so collect them carefully.

- Ask whether the school or facility is already under an affiliation agreement with TTUHSC, and allow extra time if it is new to TTUHSC.
- Keep your clearance current: BLS, immunizations, annual HIPAA training, mandatory health insurance, and a drug screen if TTUHSC or the site requests one.
- Keep your RN license (Texas or compact multistate, unencumbered) active through the whole term.

Admission itself asks little teaching background: TTUHSC calls teaching experience in the clinical setting "recommended, but not required," so this practicum may be your first sustained teaching role, and a patient, experienced preceptor matters all the more.
A teaching site new to TTUHSC may need an affiliation agreement before your first practicum day, and TTUHSC publishes no lead time, so start that conversation a full term ahead.
Campus days, start term and grades
The Nursing Education track is online, with a required on-campus intensive for Advanced Health Assessment (NURS 5342) and, per TTUHSC's archived graduate FAQ, 2-3 campus days across the program. The 2026-27 catalog lists a Fall start for the track; no Spring window for education was found. Fall 2026 classes begin Sept. 8, and the academic calendar guide has every 2026-27 date.
Grades use the graduate rule: pass/fail on the practicum portion, and an unsatisfactory result there becomes an F for the course no matter how the coursework went. The minimum passing grade in each nursing course is a B. If your teaching hours run past the end of the term, the "PR" (In Progress) grade is the one TTUHSC uses for clinical and practicum work.

Can I complete NURS 6368 where I work?
