Studying with TTUHSC while living in Michigan
Michigan residents can apply to TTUHSC's graduate nursing tracks: the School of Nursing's licensure disclosure lists the state as meeting requirements, with no bar on graduate students. Michigan stays outside the multistate compact, and that decides how you satisfy the MSN's license wording.

Where Michigan stands on TTUHSC's disclosure
TTUHSC publishes a professional licensure disclosure for each graduate program, and Michigan shows a plain "Meets" on every graduate table: NP, midwifery and BSN to DNP.

That mark opens the door to an application, not a seat. Because regulations keep shifting, TTUHSC's graduate pages stop short of promising, when you apply, that residents of every state can be admitted, and they ask applicants outside Texas to check with the Admissions Team on whether they can apply.
The license question comes first
For the MSN, TTUHSC's handbook wants a current, unencumbered RN license that is either issued by Texas or carries multistate status under the compact. A Michigan-issued license qualifies as neither, because the state's compact bill, HB 4246, is still only pending. An MSN applicant from Michigan should expect to add a Texas RN license, or settle another route in writing with Admissions. The DNP programs word their rule differently; the RN license page sets out each version.
Michigan's own licensing has quirks worth knowing. Anyone seeking a Michigan RN license goes through a criminal background check, finishes a one-time training on spotting victims of trafficking, and logs two hours of implicit bias training in the five years before issue. Nurse practitioners there also hold a specialty certification, which Michigan issues only to people with a current state RN license and national certification from a recognized body. That two-part credential is what we confirm when we line up a Michigan preceptor.
No Michigan filing surfaced for out-of-state programs
Our research turned up no Michigan rule or Board guidance obliging a school elsewhere to ask permission, or even send word, before its students start clinical work in Michigan. The approval rules in the Michigan Administrative Code (R 338.10301 onward) address schools located in the state, and when licensing graduates, Michigan relies on national accreditation to recognize programs from other states. The Board itself was not asked, so treat this as a gap in known rules, not a ruling.
That puts the weight on TTUHSC's own steps. Two sign-offs, one for the preceptor and one for the facility, come from SON staff and faculty, and each preceptor you use gets a fresh electronic preceptor agreement every term.
Practice climate and places to look
In AANP's grouping, Michigan NP practice counts as restricted: prescribing controlled substances requires delegation from a physician.
The Detroit metro dwarfs the rest, with Grand Rapids a distant second, then Lansing and Flint. Among the large health systems are McLaren Health Care, Henry Ford Health and Corewell Health, along with Trinity Health Michigan and the University of Michigan's system, Michigan Medicine. Each is only an illustration; every facility earns TTUHSC's approval individually. On incentives, an MDHHS pilot with Michigan State University rewarded preceptors of MSU students alone and is finished, and research found no preceptor tax credit on Michigan's books.
If you relocate during the program
Should you leave Michigan partway through, TTUHSC's handbook requires graduate online students to tell it at least 60 days ahead. Board approval in the destination state then turns on the specific clinical placement proposed, one student at a time, and TTUHSC makes no promise that you continue. Questions TTUHSC students ask
Is TTUHSC's online FNP open to Michigan residents?
Michigan is marked "Meets" for the MSN FNP and every other TTUHSC graduate track, with no graduate restriction attached. Clinical hours take place near home once SON staff and faculty approve your preceptor and site. Admission is still decided on your application, so check eligibility with TTUHSC's Admissions Team before you apply.
Will my Michigan RN license satisfy TTUHSC's MSN requirement?
On its own it probably falls short. The MSN wording names Texas licenses and compact multistate ones, and Michigan's licenses are single-state because the state has not joined. Plan on adding a Texas RN license, and confirm the route with Admissions before you submit an application.
Must TTUHSC get the Michigan board's permission before my rotation?
Nothing in Michigan's rules or guidance calls for it, as far as research found. The Board's program rules address Michigan-based schools. Your course faculty have the last word, and the approvals that decide your rotation are TTUHSC's own.
How often would I travel to Texas from Michigan?
MSN nurse practitioner and midwifery students are on campus 7 to 8 days in total, and their OSCEs take place in Lubbock. BSN to DNP students visit every semester, with intensives split among Lubbock, Austin and Dallas; the intensives page has specifics.
Are there preceptor incentives in Michigan?
None that would fit a TTUHSC student. The one program on record, a pilot run by the MDHHS nursing office with Michigan State University, is over and only ever covered preceptors of MSU's FNP and PMHNP students. Research found no Michigan tax credit for preceptors either.
