South Dakota: which TTUHSC nursing tracks are open to you
South Dakota splits TTUHSC's graduate options. TTUHSC's disclosure puts its unable-to-accept mark on South Dakota for the BSN to DNP, meaning residents cannot enter that program from here. The MSN nurse practitioner tracks and Nurse-Midwifery carry no such mark and show Meets, so those routes are open.

One track closed, the rest open
TTUHSC keeps separate licensure tables for its MSN APRN tracks, Nurse-Midwifery and the BSN to DNP. South Dakota reads differently on the third table than on the first two.

TTUHSC gives no reason for the BSN to DNP mark, so plan around the mark itself. A South Dakota nurse aiming for NP practice can look at the MSN FNP or another MSN track. For every track, TTUHSC's program pages ask applicants from outside Texas to confirm eligibility with the Admissions Team before applying, since changing regulations can keep some states unsettled at application time.
What South Dakota's Board expects of TTUHSC
For an MSN student, South Dakota asks little of TTUHSC up front. The Board's 2020 guidance for schools elsewhere says it grants them no approval at all; a direct-care rotation stands on the agreement TTUHSC makes with your South Dakota preceptor or clinic. What the Board does want is a faculty link to the state: when APRN students train there, at least one TTUHSC faculty member should carry South Dakota APRN licensure or the privilege to practice. ARSD 20:48:07:49 makes the same point for distance education. That piece sits with TTUHSC, so ask your program director how it is covered.
Your preceptor choice has its own reference point in ARSD 20:48:07:34. Written for South Dakota's own approved programs, it pairs a student with someone licensed at the student's target level or above, and pairs APRN students with APRNs in a similar role, population or specialty. TTUHSC's staff and faculty still approve each preceptor and facility.
Compact license, full practice and the APRN Compact
Since January 2018, South Dakota nurses have held compact licenses, and a current, unencumbered multistate one issued here satisfies TTUHSC's MSN license rule (license guide).
In AANP's terms South Dakota is a full practice state, once a newly certified NP has worked through a 1,040-hour transition inside a written collaborative arrangement. South Dakota also enacted the APRN Compact, signing in February 2024, but the compact stays dormant until seven states join and only five have.
Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Aberdeen
In South Dakota, clinicians gather around Sioux Falls, a metro that spills into Minnesota, then Rapid City and, on a smaller scale, Aberdeen. Sanford Health, Monument Health and Avera Health are the systems most students will know by name. Each facility has its own student process, and TTUHSC's approval stands apart from it.

Not while South Dakota is your home. TTUHSC's licensure disclosure places its unable-to-accept mark on South Dakota for the BSN to DNP only; the MSN tables show Meets. If a move is coming, or your situation is unusual, ask the Admissions Team directly before you plan around the doctorate.
Is TTUHSC's PMHNP track open to South Dakota nurses?
The MSN PMHNP is open: South Dakota shows Meets on the MSN APRN table. The track admits in Spring only, and its clinical rotations take place in your home area with approved preceptors. How often do MSN students from South Dakota travel to Texas?
Across the whole MSN, TTUHSC asks for 7-8 campus days, and the OSCEs among them are in Lubbock. Because OSCE dates go out a couple of months early, you can arrange travel from Sioux Falls or Rapid City well ahead.
Does South Dakota require anything from my preceptor?
The Board lets TTUHSC and your preceptor or clinic set placement terms between themselves. Its preceptor standard for in-state approved programs looks for a license at or beyond your goal and, when the preceptor is an APRN, a similar role or specialty. Whether a given preceptor fits your course is TTUHSC's decision.
