North Carolina and TTUHSC: a closed state for graduate nursing
TTUHSC's licensure disclosure lists North Carolina with the line "TTUHSC SON is unable to accept graduate students from this state." A nurse living in North Carolina cannot join TTUHSC's online MSN, midwifery or BSN to DNP tracks from there. The state's rules still matter to anyone moving in or out, and one may surprise you: North Carolina's board says it does not approve graduate nursing programs at all.

Program by program, for a North Carolina resident
Each graduate table on TTUHSC's licensure disclosure treats North Carolina alike. The MSN APRN tracks read "Meets", with the double asterisk that carries the note, and Nurse-Midwifery and the BSN to DNP show the same mark. Living in North Carolina, you sit outside all three.

When a move is part of the plan
Relocating is what turns the answer around. Texas and the states without the double asterisk are open to TTUHSC's graduate applicants, although every graduate program page warns that regulatory change keeps the School of Nursing from committing ahead of time to students from certain states. Its Admissions Team confirms eligibility, so reach them before you apply, with your future address in hand.
On licensing, North Carolina nurses start in a good position. North Carolina belongs to the Nurse Licensure Compact, in force there since 2018, so a multistate license issued in North Carolina fits TTUHSC's MSN rule, which names two acceptable licenses: Texas, or compact multistate. Multistate status follows your primary residence, so ask the boards how a relocation affects it and read the RN license guide.
How North Carolina handles graduate students and NPs
Here is a North Carolina detail worth knowing: its Board of Nursing leaves graduate education alone. Master's, doctoral and RN-BSN programs, whether they come from inside the state or outside it, are neither approved nor rejected there, because the board treats them as outside what it governs. SARA matters more. North Carolina signed on in June 2016, and the board's FAQ says a student whose college holds SARA approval may be able to complete clinical field placements in the state alongside that college's coursework.
AANP classes NP practice here as restricted. A Joint Subcommittee with members from both the nursing and medical boards oversees NP licensure, and a North Carolina NP stays in an agreement with a physician throughout their career.

Around 2.48 million people live in the North Carolina part of the Charlotte metro, followed in size by Raleigh-Cary, then Greensboro-High Point and Winston-Salem.

Questions TTUHSC students ask
Can I study TTUHSC's family nurse practitioner track from North Carolina?
Not while North Carolina is your home. Both FNP routes, the MSN FNP and the FNP track of the BSN to DNP, fall under TTUHSC's note that its School of Nursing is unable to accept graduate students from the state. Moving to Texas or a state without the mark can change that, and TTUHSC's Admissions Team confirms eligibility before you apply.
Does North Carolina's 30-day clinical request rule apply to NP students?
Only for unlicensed students. The agency rule, 21 NCAC 36 .0233, targets out-of-state students who hold no license, and it has the North Carolina facility's chief nursing administrator, or an RN designee, file the request a minimum of 30 days ahead. Licensed master's and doctoral students with neither a North Carolina nor a multistate license get a different instruction: contact the board's Licensure Department to learn what applies.
Are the states around North Carolina open to TTUHSC graduate students?
Yes, none of the four carries TTUHSC's "unable to accept" note: Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee all read "Meets" for the MSN APRN tracks. Their own boards differ, and Tennessee has a two-year moratorium on out-of-state program approvals and clinical placements, explained in the Tennessee guide. I'm a TTUHSC student. Can I move to North Carolina mid-program?
Every graduate online student must give the School of Nursing at least 60 days' notice before relocating, and approval in the new state is decided case by case around the proposed placement.
